Biophilia – means ‘the love of life and living things’ and was a term popularized by American biologist Edward O Wilson in the 1980’s, when he observed how the increasing urbanization of our landscape was leading to a disconnection with the natural world.
Wilson believed that we all have a genetic connection to the natural world built up through hundreds of thousands of years of living in or around nature; but, as our lifestyles have become increasingly urbanized and ‘online’, we have become more cut off than ever from our natural habitat. This has lead to us having less opportunity for our body and minds to naturally recuperate, which has in turn increased our stress levels and impacted our mental wellbeing.
By incorporating biophilic principles into our interior design, we can harness the beneficial qualities of natural and sustainable materials into our homes – helping people to reconnect with the natural environment, elevating our mood and wellbeing. We also use plenty of indoor plants, which helps to improve air quality by producing oxygen and filtering air and promote the use of natural light where possible, to help reconnect us to our natural circadian rhythms, which regulates our sleep cycles.
